How we source

Everything on this site comes from the public record.

Parliamentary voting divisions, Hansard, and official government sources. Every claim is dated, sourced, and linked. Where a party or politician's record is mixed – votes going both ways on the same issue – we say so, rather than only showing the side that suits an argument.

We're not asking anyone to take our word for it. Most of what's here is checkable in a couple of minutes at theyvoteforyou.org.au or on the Australian Parliament's own website. If you find something on this site you think is wrong, we want to know – get in touch and we'll check it.

Where we look

• They Vote For You – an independent, non-partisan project of the OpenAustralia Foundation that publishes every division in federal parliament and how each member voted.
• Hansard – the official transcript of everything said in parliament, published by the Department of Parliamentary Services.
• Bills and explanatory memoranda – published by the Parliament of Australia.
• Government and party media releases – quoted only where the words are the party's own.

How we handle a vote

A division in parliament is a yes or a no on a specific question, on a specific day. We name the date, the chamber and the question, so you can find the same record we did. Where a vote was on an amendment rather than a whole bill, we say that.

We don't characterise a vote as something it wasn't. If a senator voted against a bill for a reason they've stated publicly, that's on the record too, and you can read it in Hansard.

If we've got something wrong

We want to know. If you find something on this site you think is inaccurate, get in touch and we'll check it. If it's wrong, we'll correct it and say what we changed.
